A group of 10 teachers/staff from Pepperell High School plus 2 spouses of school personnel have completed CERT training (Community Emergency Response Team Training) and SERT training (School Emergency Response Team).  The training is sponsored by the Department of Homeland Security's Ready Campaign. Resolve to be Ready is a nationwide effort designed to increase awareness as well as encourage individuals, families, businesses and communities to take action and prepare for emergencies.

In a press release, Emergency Management director Scotty Hancock said, "Our community has seen first-hand how beneficial it is to be prepared. The Wax Community tornado back in March was a prime example to remind us to be ready at all times."  According to Hancock, the CERT team in Floyd County is now over 300 strong and was a tremendous help in assisting in the recovery efforts immediately after the tornado hit in March.  Topics covered in the classes are proper bandaging techniques, how to communicate with First Responders, providing simple, but life saving treatment and much more.

There have been a number of mock training activities at various schools in the county, however, PHS, is the first school in the Floyd County School System to have its own team trained.  PHS team members include: Alana Ellenburg, Beverly Downing, Bob Farmer, Mary Elena Kirk, Jeff Kirk, Mitzi Edge, Sandy Bratcher, Jada Reynolds, Michelle Stephens, Tim Reynolds, Kathleen Routh and Janie Maddox.
