Sam Hopkins, a senior at Model High School, was selected the system STAR student for Floyd County Schools at a recent Exchange Club luncheon to honor STAR students and teachers.  The Greater Rome Chamber of Commerce announced STAR student winners for Rome and Floyd County at the Exchange Club luncheon. 

High schools throughout Georgia name a STAR (Student Teacher Achievement Recognition) student, and the student chooses a STAR teacher to share in this recognition.  The Model High senior is a self-proclaimed “math guy,” so it was appropriate that he should name Jennifer Greer, his AP calculus teacher at Model High, as his STAR teacher.

• Armuchee High — Student: Juliana Rose Davis; teacher: Cathy Studdard, gifted English
• Coosa High School — Student: Krystin Elizabeth Allaire; teacher: Jackie Payne, AP language
• Pepperell High School — (tie) Student: Sharlie M. Puff; teacher: Jeffrey Kirk, gifted chemistry; and student: Zachary Greg Johnston; teacher: Robert McGraw Jr., AP gifted calculus

The STAR program, now in its 51st year, is sponsored by the Professional Association of Georgia Educations Foundation (PAGE), the Georgia Chamber of Commerce and the Georgia Department of Education. To obtain the STAR nomination, high school seniors must have the highest score on one test date on the three-part SAT and be in the top 10 percent or top 10 students of their class based on grade point average.

Hopkins represented Floyd County Schools in the region competition held recently at the Coosa Country Club.  Region winners compete for the state honor.

Sam Hopkins plans to pursue a major in aerospace engineering in college.
