Floyd County Schools has been selected to participate in a national study of parent perceptions of public schools.  The study will use a survey developed by the National Center for Educational Leadership to assess parent opinions.  The survey is available online from the school system’s website at www.floydboe.net.  Parents of students in the school system are encouraged to go to the website to complete the short online survey.  The direct link to the survey is found on the homepage of the system’s website.  The survey will be open through December 15.

The National Center for School Leadership has studied the attitudes and beliefs of parents for the past five years.  The 2009 survey seeks to answer the questions:

• How connected do parents feel to their child’s school?
• What means of communication do parents find the most effective? 
• What could better enable parents to be effective in supporting student achievement?
• How do parents feel about the quality of our community schools? 

This study seeks to further understand how parents perceive schools, assesses levels of parent satisfaction across many factors, gain insight into how to best build home-to-school connectivity and discover what matters most to parents.

The survey is a part of Floyd County Schools commitment to communication.  “A key element of communication is listening and seeking to better understand the thoughts and wishes of those we serve,” said Dr. Lynn Plunkett, superintendent of Floyd County Schools. “The school system implemented a strategic, Intentional Listening program three years ago to ensure that the system continues to be in touch with our parents, students, teachers and community.”  The system’s Intentional Listening program includes a teacher survey, student survey, an employee advisory group, and an advisory group made up of parents and students.  

The National Center for School Leadership is focused on leadership and organizational issues that impact K-12 public schools and school districts today. The Center was founded to work with schools on a range of issues related to this central theme including: addressing school climate and culture, developing leadership capacity with public schools and improving and strengthening organizational structures within public schools and school districts.
